Ngasem or Bird market

Today is our last day in Yogjakarta. Frank & Hans are to the Air force museum while I am doing my blog and relax a bit in the hotel.
In the afternoon we go to Ngasem or Bird market. The market has been moved. Until 2010 it was close to the water palace, but is moved more south now.

Before we went there, we had lunch in a nice backpackers restaurant own by a Belgian chain. On the wall we saw a photo report from a "Jalan kaki" (hiking) trip from Semarang to Pangaritis in the south, a trip of 12 days, fully guided by Google maps.

The becaks brought us to the market.

There are a lot of becaks in Yogja. Most becak riders hire their becak and have to cycle each day for an hour from home to Yogja one way. So they earn some rest once and a while.

Although the market is still nice to see, it lost a bit of his old charm, where it was more mixed with the food market.

The birds make a lot of noise.

Taking good care of the animals. The pigeons are couples and want to stay together.

The trick is to keep one in the cage, the other one can walk around freely, but will stay close!
The cages have all different colours and sizes.

Not only birds, but also little pets are sold.

After the market we went back to the hotel, to have a drink, pickup our luggage and left to the airport to catch our flight to Bali!

Bye bye Yogja!
